S502 Book Talk Assignment: Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keyes

As an assignment in S502 Collection Development (as taught by soon-to-be-Dr. Julie Marie Frye, MLS, instructor), students are required to give "book talks," which are like book, movie, or program trailers, which provide a brief summary of a book's plot and are designed to entice listeners to read the book. Mine will be presented tomorrow (Monday 11/29/10) and will feature the book Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keyes. To read my earlier blog about this book, please click here. ILF Conference: MPL Library Videos Workshop (Epilogue)

Thanks for "Rocking" Our Workshop!

The theme of the 2010 Indiana Library Federation (ILF) annual conference was Libraries Rock! On Wednesday, November 17, 2010, Mooresville Public Library (Mooresville, Indiana) presented an ILF workshop about using videos to promote literacy and library programs and events. The workshop (Book Trailers Rock!) was presented by Suzanne Walker, M.L.S., MPL Youth Services Librarian, and William R. Buckley, J.D., MPL Indiana Room Librarian

On behalf of the presenters, MPL would like to thank everybody who attended our workshop. We appreciated the wonderful and enthusiastic turnout, which exceeded the room's capacity (it was standing room only for about 10 attendees). We hope our staff was able to provide some interesting information about how videos may be used to promote your libraries.

If you were unable to attend, or if you attended and did not receive a handout (we ran out! Sorry!), and you would like a free copy of the team's MS-PowerPoint slideshow, please email billb@mooresville.lib.in.us or suzannew@mooresville.lib.in.us to request a copy, and we will be happy to email it to you. The slideshow is rather large, so please advise if your email server has size restrictions for attachments.

For an example of one of the library's videos, here is our most popular video, Librarians Do Taio Cruz, which Suzanne Walker wrote, edited, and co-directed (along with Jaymi Edwards, MPL Early Literacy Specialist):

ALA Website Includes MPL Video Hyperlink

The American Library Association (ALA) has a web site called I Love Libraries.org, which keeps the public informed about new and exciting developments in the library world. One of the site's pages features videos created by libraries, and recently one of Mooresville Public Library's videos has been added to the hyperlink list. Check it out at:

Scroll down until you see the textual hyperlink for the MPL video (in the "more videos" category).

Hope you enjoy watching our (and other libraries') videos!

MPL Book Trailer #78: The 13 Clocks, by James Thurber

Mooresville Public Library (Mooresville, Indiana) presents a book trailer featuring "The 13 Clocks," by James Thurber. According to Time magazine, this children's classic (ages 9-12) "is one of the cleverest [fairy tales] that any modern writer has been able to tell. . . . There is no living author who moves about in fairyland with such wit and easy familiarity." Although Thurber passed in 1961, and Time's review was probably written when the book was first published (1950), the book has been continuously in print. Check your local library or online bookseller.
